Why Cement Lock?

People are at risk of exposure to toxic materials in their local environment. Hazardous materials management typically involves transporting toxic materials from one location to another, buried out-of-sight or placed in a landfill with on-going liabilities, until it is a challenge for the next generation. Or, hazardous material is spilled or illegally dumped with immediate environmental and health consequences.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

Cement-Lock™ is a versatile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly manufacturing technology for producing construction-grade cements from a wide variety of contaminated waste materials, such as sediments, Superfund sites, sludges, chemical wastes, petroleum refinery wastes, and incinerator residues. Organic and inorganic contaminants are present in these wastes across a broad range of concentrations. Through the Cement-Lock process, contaminated materials and proprietary modifiers are fed to a reactive melter operating under highly specialized conditions where all the organic compounds are completely destroyed. Chlorine and sulfur compounds are sequestered and heavy metals are immobilized within the molten matrix.

During processing, the melt (EcoMelt™) is imparted with latent cementitious properties that allow it to be transformed into construction-grade cement. The Cement-Lock Technology is unique because it not only decontaminates the hazardous materials but also converts them into a beneficial commercial commodity, namely, construction-grade cement.

Through the technology we own and competitive solutions we provide, we seek markets where Volcano Partners has significant advantages introducing a permanent solution for the destruction of the toxic properties of hazardous materials, and their conversion to beneficial reuse.

We provide comprehensive solutions that are flexible and can remedy each individual toxic site where we apply our solutions with a plan for safe, public and/or private community redevelopment of the site(s) that complement the U.S. EPA’s Land Revitalization Action Plan.

THE CHALLENGE

Millions of tons of hazardous material is dumped, spilled or transported to confined disposal facilities (CDFs and CADs) each year. Human health and ecosystems are challenged at every stage of its lifecycle. Metals such as lead and mercury pose significant health threats, with an estimated 23% of the deaths in the developing world attributed to environmental factors.

The U.S. EPA funded the development of the Cement-Lock process to convert hazardous waste to beneficial-use products that restore the health of ecosystems and communities devastated by pollution. The creation of marketable products beneficial to developing communities makes Cement-Lock a sustainable and economical solution.  Only Cement-Lock is capable of using hazardous waste as a “raw material” in the production of beneficial-use products that become the building-blocks of sustainable communities through the production of non-hazardous Cement, Electricity and Water Purification.

A Cement-Lock plant may be built and operational within a short period of time. All components required to build a Cement-Lock plant are commercially available. And the Cement-Lock process is economical since contaminated sediment and hazardous material is the raw material converted to salable beneficial use products, reducing operating costs. 

The Cement-Lock process should not to be confused with either cement manufacturing plants or incineration. The Cement-Lock process is considerably simpler than a Portland cement manufacturing plant and bears little or no resemblance to the actual complex cement plant. Unlike a cement plant, a Cement-Lock plant does not have the extensive sizing requirements for the materials being processed; it does not produce waste streams (such as cement kiln dust); it does not require complex energy management to save energy; and it does not produce high NOx.

NOT INCINERATION: Cement-Lock is not an incineration process. Incinerators do not operate at the ultra-high temperatures of the Cement-Lock conversion process and incinerators do not produce a consumer friendly product. They generate ash that contains leachable heavy metals which are disposed of as hazardous waste. Further, incinerators generate dioxins and dioxin precursors.

The implementation of the Socially Responsible Cement-Lock process provides the start of a sustainable industry for many communities in which toxic wastes are permanently removed from human contact and converted into construction-grade cement and electricity. Employment and electricity are economic benefits complimented with the fact that there are no secondary hazardous waste streams produced from Cement-Lock processing.
